Staircases can be fun and cool to make and decorate, but for day to day travel, ladder shafts are less bother to create and quicker than any stairs to travel. Ladder shafts are easy to make, and only take wood, which is in infinite supply and easy to farm. The only thing better is a minecart ride, but those take a long time to make and a lot of iron to craft. Ladders are fairly quick to go up and down. You will probably want more than 2 blocks high at that level, so go ahead and dig out the block above your floor's torch as well. The inner circle for the railing is 17 and the outer for the wall is 27 (measurements with outlines included). When you want to create a floor, just go stand on the torch which you want to be the "floor" of the new level, and start digging everything but the ladder out. This creates a ladder shaft straight down, with torches on one side of the ladder, every 3 blocks. Now you are ready to repeat your dig pattern by standing on your torch and digging 3 more blocks down in your ladder shaft. If you dig it out and lava shows up, you can place a block back to stop it, or run up the ladders you just placed. As long as you didn't dig into a cavern or lava, then place ladders, fall down shaft, and finish placing ladders. Pick a side (a block to the right or to the left of your target shaft location) that you want your torches to light the shaft. I had hoped in the future to improve the design to allow a waterslide down one, and a minecart ride up the other. While this does find all the minerals, it's a lot of extra work. In the original version, I started at two opposite corners and made a double spiral staircase. In my version, I place torches on the floor in corners, I mine the 8 squares around the center, but leave a single block central pillar in the middle from top to bottom.
